As we welcome the warm breezes of summer, it's time to bid farewell to heavy sweaters and say hello to light layers and swimsuits. This is also a great time to assess our seasonal wardrobes and consider questions like, "What new clothes should I buy for my children? Are there any gaps that need to be filled?".
We invited our friend and fabulous stylist, María Montané, to chat about all things summer styling. From the best fabrics to wear to the latest trends she's seen around the world, she gave us some great insights. Read her full interview below!
TSC: How do you balance style and comfort when dressing children?
M: When styling kids, I prioritize both style and comfort by selecting pieces that are made from soft, breathable fabrics and have flexible fits. I often opt for stretchy materials or adjustable waistbands to ensure freedom of movement.
Additionally, I pay attention to the design details such as flat seams to prevent irritation. By choosing stylish pieces that prioritize comfort, children can look good and feel great at the same time.
TSC: What fabrics do you recommend for summer clothing to keep children cool?
M: I would say lightweight and airy fabrics such as cotton, linen and bamboo. I like linen but it can get very wrinkly very fast but it's always nice to have some easy linen pieces. These materials are not only breathable but also absorbent, helping to wick away moisture and keep kids comfortable in the heat.
Also, I love when kids wear bathing suits and shorts or bathing suits and skirts to go to the park. Easy to dry and some pieces have UV UPF and that's a plus :D - I remember that was my summer daily uniform when I was a kid. Bathing suits everyday! Cap or bucket hat is a must too! (I love to accessorize)
TSC: Can you suggest some versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched for different summer occasions?
M: As you know, I'm all about mixing and matching prints and styles. I like to put a basic strappy dress with a fun neckie or colorful tee underneath. Ruffle shirt in an interesting fabric and cargo shorts for girls.
For boys a cool tank with a print and easy denim shorts and fun socks. I like the boys polo styles that TSC has because you can elevate them for something more formal with linen pants or make them sporty, classy or casual.
TSC: What are your favorite colors or prints you see trending for kids this summer?
M: I'm seeing several fun and vibrant trends in kids' fashion. Bold colors like oranges, coral pinks, and aqua blues are popular choices for adding a pop of excitement to summer wardrobes for boys and girls. I have right now a BRIGHT GREEN phase, and I love to match it with some soft pastel colors like lilac, baby pink or butter yellow. And it's pretty cool that the summer styles like boxy tees and bermuda shorts and the color palettes I mentioned before are unisex.
Additionally, playful prints such as tropical florals, fruit motifs, and tie-dye patterns are making a splash in children's fashion this season. These cheerful colors and whimsical prints capture the essence of summer and are sure to bring joy to any child's wardrobe.
